As we celebrate the 75th year of the organization of ASBPA, we have a right to be proud of our accomplishments, from assisting to create the Beach Erosion Board in 1930, to the passage of important legislation through the years such as the U.S. Beach Improvement and Protection Act in 1936 and the Beach Erosion Bill of 1946. Over the years, ASBPA has become more technical in its nature, bringing about a new organization in 1996, the American Coastal Coalition (ACC), to carry the legislative side of our journey. ASBPA is pleased to co-host this conference with ACC. |
| ASBPA
and ACC invite you to Washington, D.C., for a conference on
"Partnerships" for Coastal Preservation The three-day program (May 13 - 16, 2001) will feature papers and invited speakers in this theme area to explore the roles and mechanics fostering partnerships between Federal, State, Local, and non governmental entities to manage, enhance, and restore coastal systems. We will look at how these various resource agencies and organizations can work together to jointly develop regional management strategies, preserve the littoral system, remediate damaged sites, optimize economic value, and enhance coastal environments. The ASBPA/ACC Conference will be immediately followed by a conference of the Association of Coastal Engineers (May 16, 17, 2001). The trip will begin with a stop at the north end of Assateague Island, to observe the large overwash area which will be receiving beach nourishment to protect and improve a sand dependent wildlife area. The trip will then move on through Ocean City, MD. - a ten year old Federally assisted beach project area. Then on to Delaware with both urbanized and undeveloped beach areas. The Indian River sand bypass plant will be running for tour particpants to see in action. The trip will end at the Cape Henlopen spit area - a large, natural sand sink at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Return to D.C. This Conference, in addition to reviewing the latest techniques for managing coastal erosion and beach loss, will also look at the recreational, sociological and political side of our quest to renourish and rebuild this country's greatest recreational asset; its coastal beaches. Looking forward to seeing you in D.C. Regards, Greg Woodell,
President Howard
